  1. The mode of admission was defined as: admission from home for patients who were directly hospitalized from home and admission from another hospital for patients hospitalized from another hospital. The ICD-10 codes used for definitions are displayed in the Additional file 1: Table S1
  2. The different type of hospital was separated between public hospital including the group of universitary/regional hospital, the group of general/local hospital and other institutions like short hospitalization or private hospital
  3. ICU intensive and intermediate care units, ICP intracranial pressure monitoring, EVD external ventricular drain, IQR interquartile
  4. aVascular complications included ischemic stroke, transient ischemic stroke and cerebral venous thrombosis
